4 all the ravers

DVAI About

For more than thirty years, Double Vision have documented a story woven into the heart of Scotland’s rave culture — a movement born in dark clubs, open fields, and makeshift venues across the country.

From LOVE at the Plaza Ballroom in Glasgow, to Rezerection at Ingliston, to the Sweatbox in Arbroath and the Rhythmic State in Stornoway, their cameras captured nights that defined a generation.

What began as a simple desire to “get the vibe” soon became a mission. Paul travelled with bags of cameras, batteries, and lights — handing them to friends with one instruction: hold the shot, and capture the moment.

Weekend after weekend, Paul and Linda crossed Scotland, filming a scene that was raw, euphoric, and alive. The lightshows, the energy, the sense of unity — all part of a culture shaped by the ecstasy‑driven spirituality of the era.

Before the rave movement, Double Vision had filmed rock bands and travelled through the Middle East. But this was different. This was immediate, visceral, and unstoppable — and they were right there in the middle of it.

By 1999, life and work forced the crew to step back. But nearly a decade later, as early social media reconnected old ravers, the memories resurfaced. Paul began digitising tapes while caring full‑time for his mother during her Alzheimer’s decline.

The response was overwhelming. Clips went viral. People wanted the archive back. And so Paul reached out to Marc McLean — a computer engineer and recording student — to help bring Double Vision into the digital age.

Together, they rebuilt the project. New cameras, new events, and custom editing systems built during lockdown. All while restoring hundreds of fragile tapes — some damaged, some unlabelled, some nearly lost to time.

The work has since been used by major broadcasters and filmmakers — from MTV and STV to BBC Scotland and Warner Bros Discovery — cementing Double Vision as a vital part of Scotland’s cultural record.

Today, the mission remains the same: to rescue the footage, preserve the memories, and tell the story of how Scotland raved — through the lens of those who were there, every step of the way.
